Wales’ Deputy Climate Minister Announces Road Project Freeze

The Deputy Minister for Climate Change in Wales, Lee Waters, has announced a freeze on new road building projects (Cymraeg), whilst a review of highway schemes across Wales is carried out.

The review will consider how Wales can shift spending towards better maintaining existing roads, rather than building new ones, and look at all proposed road investments to ensure they fit with net-zero emissions goals.

The Deputy Minister announced the freeze in an oral statement (Cymraeg) to the Senedd, in which he recognised “transport makes up some 17 per cent of our total emissions and so must play its part.”

The full terms of reference for the review and who will make up the review panel will be published in due course. It has been noted that the panel will consist of experts on both transport and climate change.
