Senior/Principal Ecologist
Hours: 8.30am-5.00pm Monday to Friday. Flexibility may be required in order to meet the operational needs of the business.
Location: Yarnfield, Stone.
Wage: £35,000 – £45,000 DOE. Bonus scheme also available to the right candidate.
Responsibilities and Duties:
ProHort Ltd are looking for an experienced senior/principal ecologist. ProHort is a growing commercial business, based in the arboriculture, ecological and landscape development industries and focused on providing a high-quality service to all our clients. We provide a wide range of services, including:
- Protected species surveys, including bats.
- Phase 1 Extended Ecological surveys.
- UK Habitat Mapping and Classification.
- Biodiversity Net Gain matrix calculations.
- Arboricultural surveys.
- Soil and leaf testing.
- LVIAs and landscape schemes.
The Senior/Principal Ecologist would be responsible for conducting a range of different surveys throughout the UK, originating from our base in Stone with overnight stays occurring only rarely. The ideal candidate would have a wide range of experience across various aspects of ecology, including protected species and bats. The role is a commercial role, working predominantly with customers who are submitting planning applications, and the ideal candidate would therefore be comfortable working to tight deadlines.
About you:
- Bachelor’s degree in Ecology or related subject.
- Minimum of 2 – 3 years of previous relevant experience.
- Knowledge of core ecological surveys, protected species surveys including bats and biodiversity net gain.
- Class 2 Bat Licence, EPS Great Crested Newt and other protected species licences.
- Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions.
- Happy to travel on a regular basis with a full driver’s license.
- Well presented, with a confident and friendly manner.
- Competent using Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel.
- Intermediate computer literacy.
- A team player – happy to work with other members of the team to achieve goals.
- Work to a high standard, showing attention to detail, showing care and thought in all that you do.
- Comfortable working to tight deadlines.

The ideal candidate will be a confident, self-motivated person who is organised and communicates well both with customers and the internal team.
You will be working as part of the office team; however, you will have specific responsibilities.
The wage for this role is £35,000 – £45,000. However, there is the opportunity within this role to work closely with the Managing Director and Head of Operations to help grow the company, which the suitable candidate will be financially compensated for.
