Environment Bill amendment to “halt” biodiversity loss by 2030
Government yesterday tabled a new amendment to the Environment Bill that would replace the wording “further the objective of halting” with simply “halting” species loss in England by 2030.
CIEEM is delighted to see this more accountable wording suggested to replace the previous weak wording that could so easily have been ignored or circumvented.
The new wording provides reassurance that ministers are taking the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis more seriously, but it still remains a concern that this duty will need to be embedded across all public bodies and government departments.
