Nature is development’s best insurance policy
The UK is not building the homes and infrastructure it needs fast enough, and at the same time it isn’t delivering on nature recovery at the pace or scale required either. CIEEM’s Good Development project makes the case that these two goals are not in conflict with one another. Done well, integrating nature into development makes it better quality, more resilient and more likely to hold its value over time. This brings benefits for communities, businesses and nature.

Evidence and briefings
Our flagship briefing, Good by Design, sets out the case for Good Development with data, case studies and practical recommendations for government. Case studies include Mayfield Park in Manchester, flood defence works on the Humber Estuary, and a housing development in Hampshire.

Engagement with decision-makers
We’re working directly with parliamentarians and civil servants to embed ecological expertise into planning policy, infrastructure delivery and the government’s housing and nature recovery commitments.
Engagement across the UK and Ireland
Good Development isn’t an England-only story. We’re developing parallel outputs and engagement across the devolved nations and Ireland, reflecting the different policy contexts ecologists and environmental managers work within across these islands.
