See CIEEMs response to the Consultation on the Clean Air Strategy in Ireland April 2022.
CIEEM highlighted the need for urgent action on the issue of nitrogen deposition across the Natura 2000 network.
Other recommendations include:
- Development of a long term targeted national ammonia monitoring network. This is essential to protect habitats and reduce ammonia emissions into the future.
- Research into the links between nitrogen deposition and climate change. It has been shown that dry deposition of ammonia increases N2O emissions and deposition of total nitrogen affects the ability of peatlands to act as carbon sinks. However these effects have yet to be quantified for Ireland, especially where large portions of midlands bogs are in areas with known high ammonia emissions.
