Yesterday (21 August), CIEEM sent a letter to the UK Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, on the subject of rumoured weakening of environmental protections. Reports suggest HM Treasury are thinking of scrapping the precautionary principle, reducing protected species, and curbing judicial review powers.
These moves would be one of the most serious rollbacks of environmental protections in a generation and they directly contradict Labour’s manifesto pledges to protect biodiversity, landscapes and wildlife.
We urge HM Treasury to invest in nature recovery, embed natural capital in policy, and ensure housing and infrastructure work with nature, not against it.
