This handy little primer provides a good basic grounding in statistical approaches using clear language and with plenty of useful illustrative figures.
The text avoids getting tangled up in unnecessary detail, instead concentrating on the key information required to understand the characteristics of biological datasets, different types of investigation and which statistical tests are most appropriate. It does this in a clear and logical sequence with worked examples throughout.
The final chapter provides an opportunity to put what you’ve learnt into practice with a series of example investigations and associated questions to work through.
The author’s recognition that statistics is a tool, a means to an end that does not require the student to understand how to build the tool, is particularly refreshing. At several points the reader is advised not to worry too much about the maths, which will be particularly encouraging for those students who may find grappling with statistics a daunting prospect. As a result, this book will undoubtedly be of benefit to both undergraduate and post-graduate students, and even to those more familiar with some of the techniques described but in need of a refresher!
