New Prime Minister, New Cabinet

Keir Starmer resigned as the UK’s Prime Minister yesterday and Andy Burnham has moved into No.10 in his place.

In his first speech as Prime Minister, Burnham said that his immediate focus is on bringing down the cost of living. Amongst other commitments, he said that he will publish a 10-year plan for Britain later in the year.

Angela Eagle MP

Angela Eagle has been announced as Environment Secretary. Eagle is a longstanding MP having served since being elected in 1992. She comes into the role with previous experience in Defra, from across other government departments, and having served on many parliamentary committees.

Emma Reynolds has moved from Environment Secretary to Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Hopefully she will take some learnings from her time in Defra on the value of the natural environment back to the Treasury.

Angela Rayner is back in as Housing Secretary. She was initially made Housing Secretary when Labour came back into government but resigned due to tax irregularities. Steve Reed took over from Rayner when she stepped down and is no longer in Cabinet.

Miatta Fahnbulleh has been promoted to Energy Secretary. She takes over from Ed Miliband who has been promoted to Foreign Secretary. Miatta was CEO of the New Economics Foundation think tank before becoming MP in 2024.

Matthew Pennycook remains as the Housing Minister, but has been promoted to now attend Cabinet meetings.
