Arboricultural / Environmental Consultant (Trees & Planning)
AWA Tree Consultants Ltd – Sheffield
AWA Tree Consultants is an independent arboricultural consultancy working across the UK on a wide range of development, planning, and tree risk management projects. We work closely with planners, developers, ecologists, and local authorities, and are known for our high technical standards, proportionate advice, and supportive team culture.
We are now looking to recruit an additional consultant to support our workload and strengthen the resilience of the team as the business continues to evolve.
The role
This is a varied consultancy role suited to either a graduate / early-career consultant or an experienced arboricultural consultant, depending on skills and experience. We welcome applications from ecologists or environmental consultants looking to specialise further in trees and planning-related work.
The role will include a mix of office- and site-based work, such as:
- Tree surveys and inspections, including tree risk and BS5837 work
- Preparation of Arboricultural Impact Assessments (AIA) and Arboricultural Method Statements (AMS)
- Technical report writing, CAD plans, and data analysis
- Liaison with colleagues, clients, and local planning authorities
You’ll work alongside experienced consultants in a small team environment where professional judgement, collaboration, and defensible advice are valued.
About you
We’re open to a range of backgrounds and levels of experience. You might be:
- An experienced arboricultural consultant with a good working knowledge of BS5837 and tree risk assessments; or
- A graduate or early-career consultant with a degree in arboriculture, ecology, or a related discipline, looking to build a career in arboricultural consultancy.
In all cases, we’re looking for someone who can demonstrate:
- A genuine interest in trees, development, and the planning process
- Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
- A professional, organised approach to work
- The ability to manage workloads independently and as part of a team
- A willingness to take responsibility and develop professionally
What we offer
- A supportive and friendly team environment
- Training, mentoring, and professional development
- Clear progression as experience and confidence grow
- Hybrid working and flexibility once established
- Salary: £27,000 – £35,000 per annum, dependent on experience
AWA is a small, well-established consultancy where people are trusted, supported, and encouraged to take ownership of their work. We’re keen to continue building a team that feels invested in the business and its future.
