ACE Lead Ecologist Job Opportunity with SECAD Partnership, Midleton, co. Cork
SECAD wishes to recruit for the role of ACE Lead Ecologist as part of the Arable Coast Environment (ACE) European Innovation Partnership (EIP), which is a new four-year project managed by SECAD Partnership, tasked with reversing the decline of habitat for wintering Hen Harriers and priority farmland birds on arable (tillage) farmland along Ireland’s South Coast, working with project farmers and other landowners to achieve these goals. Our project aims to support tillage farmers to build capacity, create habitat, and improve the quality of ecological outcomes achieved on their lands.
Personal Specification
This role is ideally suited to someone who has the necessary qualifications and practical work experience, an ability to work as part of a muti-disciplinary team with a capacity to develop positive professional links with the ACE participating farmers. It is an opportunity to work in a pivotal role in a new, developing, and exciting project-based on the beautiful South coast from West Cork to Wexford.
The ideal candidate should enjoy working outdoors, have excellent communication and organisational skills, and have a keen interest in land use, ecology, and nature conservation.

Key Duties of the ACE Lead Ecologist
The core responsibilities of the ACE Lead Ecologist will include the following:
- Support the wider ACE EIP Team, coordinating the delivery of all ecological elements of the ACE Project
- Farmer and Landowner Engagement & Advisory Support
- Capacity Building, Knowledge Transfer & Collaboration
- Habitat Creation & Quality Improvements
- Scheme Development & Improvement
Essential Qualifications and Experience for the ACE Lead Ecologist Position
- A degree in Ecology, Zoology, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Excellent knowledge, expertise, and experience in farmland habitat surveys and farmland bird ecology, and bird population assessment.
- Good understanding of arable and other farmland habitats in Ireland.
- Proven work experience and track record in ecology/agri-environment projects.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and diplomacy skills – able to build rapport with the farming community and support public information/communications actions.
- Experience and knowledge of agriculture policy in Ireland, including current agri-environment schemes, other relevant EIPs, and results-based schemes
- A full clean driver’s licence and use of own car.
