In Practice is CIEEM’s highly regarded quarterly membership publication. It is highly valued by our members and is integral to the work that we do to raise standards and share knowledge.
In Practice is published in March, June, September and December, and is circulated to all members, either in print or digitally. Discussion is promoted via social media and CIEEM’s website.
CIEEM members can access the last two years of In Practice publications in the members’ area (login at the top of the page) of the website. Editions older than two years are publicly available in the Resource Hub.
In Practice invites contributions on any aspect of ecology and environmental management but does not aim to publish scientific papers presenting the results of original research. Contributions should be sent to the Editor.
Potential authors should see deadlines below and also read the Guidance for Authors.

Progress Towards 2030 With 2030 fast approaching, we invite articles reflecting on progress towards international and domestic nature targets, including 30×30 and ecological restoration commitments. Case studies linked to specific habitat types are particularly encouraged, alongside assessments of what progress has been made, where the gaps remain, and what needs to happen next across the UK and Ireland. |

AI and New Technology in Ecology From AI and drones to eDNA and eco-acoustics and beyond, we welcome articles exploring the novel technologies reshaping ecological practice. This issue focuses on genuinely cutting-edge developments rather than established techniques. We’re keen to hear about the opportunities that these tools offer as well as the risks and challenges that they raise for the profession. How is the sector adapting, and what should practitioners be thinking about as these technologies mature? |
12 February 2027 |
| 137 – September 2027 |
Biodiversity Enhancement Approaches Across the UK and Ireland As approaches to biodiversity enhancement continue to evolve across all five nations, we welcome articles examining this shifting landscape. Topics might include the implementation of new exemptions to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in England, BNG implementation for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs), the introduction of Net Benefits for Biodiversity (NBB) in Wales, the development of a metric in Scotland, and emerging BNG approaches in Ireland. We’re also interested in experiences of voluntary biodiversity enhancement and the use of Defra Biodiversity Metric in other countries, and how these various approaches compare and interact across jurisdictions. |
