CIEEM Reaches Landmark 10,000 Member Milestone

The Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) has reached a significant milestone, welcoming its 10,000th member.

This achievement reflects both the growth of the Institute and the increasing importance of ecology and environmental management in tackling the biodiversity and environmental challenges facing society today.

Looking back

When CIEEM was founded in 1991, ecology and environmental management were still emerging professions. Recognising the need for a professional body to support practitioners, promote high standards and encourage knowledge sharing, a small group of pioneers established what would become the Institute we know today.

More than three decades later, reaching 10,000 members demonstrates not only the success of CIEEM, but also how far the profession has come as a recognised and respected career path. It is a clear indication of the growing demand for ecological and environmental expertise across a wide range of sectors.

Reaching the milestone of 10,000 members is a fantastic achievement and a great tribute to all the volunteers and staff who, over the years since the Institute was formed, have worked so hard to deliver the ambitions of our founding members.  To have so many practitioners choosing to be part of the CIEEM community bodes well for an exciting future as we stretch our ambitions further in support of nature’s recovery alongside economic and social wellbeing. These are challenging times in the face of the climate and biodiversity crises, but our members are actively stepping up to deliver practical and sustainable solutions for society’s benefit.

The Power of 10,000 Professionals

CIEEM’s membership spans every stage of a professional career, from students and apprentices to experienced Chartered members and sector leaders. Each member contributes to protecting and restoring nature through their work, helping to safeguard species and habitats, influence decision-making and ensure environmental considerations are embedded where they matter most. Collectively, 10,000 professionals represent an extraordinary force for positive environmental change.

However, this milestone is about more than numbers, it represents a community of professionals who support one another, share knowledge, uphold standards and work together to advance the profession.

Looking to the Future

While this milestone is an opportunity to celebrate, it is also a reminder of the work still to be done. CIEEM remains committed to strengthening the voice of ecology and environmental management within policy and decision-making processes, broadening and diversifying its membership, and ensuring it continues to provide effective support and leadership for the sector. The Institute will also continue its work to raise standards of professional practice and champion evidence-based approaches through guidance, learning opportunities and knowledge sharing.

Celebrating a Shared Achievement

Reaching 10,000 members is a significant moment in CIEEM’s history and one that belongs to every member who has contributed to the growth and success of the profession. Together, CIEEM’s members are helping to shape a future where nature is better understood, better valued and better protected.

As we celebrate this landmark achievement, we also look forward to continuing our work in support of nature recovery and environmental excellence.
