The RACE Report 2025 Sees Racial Diversity Boost

Last week, the fourth annual RACE Report was published, which is the UK’s largest analysis of the racial diversity of charities working in the environment sector. It’s encouraging to see a clear uptick in racial diversity among the organisations that have submitted data every year since the report’s inception in 2022.

Across all environmental organisations submitting data to the project, 4.7% of staff identify as people of colour or from other ethnically minoritised groups, up from 4.5% last year. However, among the organisations that have submitted data every year of the campaign, representation now stands at 8.4%, highlighting the impact of long-term commitment.

The report shows clear progress in how organisations are embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) into their operations. Compared with 2022, far more repeat participants now fully implement actions such as EDI reporting in annual reports, regular reviews of EDI activity, exit interviews that address race equity, and tracking staff feelings of belonging.

CIEEM is proud to be a part of the report and one of the organisations to submit data since 2023. Our approach to equity, diversity and inclusion is summarised below in our 2025 transparency card.

“CIEEM is committed to promoting a culture of inclusion, fairness, and belonging amongst its employees, volunteers, and our members. Our EDI mission is to champion change as an actively anti-discriminatory organisation that works to remove barriers and to create an inclusive environment that welcomes individuals of all races, genders, ethnicities, abilities, and backgrounds.

“In support of this mission, CIEEM aims to make all of our processes as accessible as we can; values staff, Board, and our membership; works collaboratively with training providers and partners; promotes diverse routes into the profession by reaching out to young people and career changers from underrepresented communities; raising awareness of wellbeing; and supporting staff and members of CIEEM to access high quality jobs and career development opportunities that are underpinned by good working practices.”
