G7 Commit to Tackle Climate Change and Halt Biodiversity Loss by 2030

The Climate and Environment Ministers of the G7 met last Friday (21 May) and agreed to several ‘green’ pledges, including protecting 30% of Land and Oceans by 2030.

The UK holds the presidency of the G7 this year and led the meeting at which G7 members committed to the global ‘30×30’ initiative to conserve or protect at least 30 per cent of the world’s land and at least 30 per cent of the world’s ocean by 2030. The UK, the US, the EU, France, Italy, Germany, and Canada also called for an end to financing fossil fuel development in poorer countries, while the Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the USA, and the climate and environment commissioners of the EU reaffirmed their commitment to limiting global heating to 1.5C.

This meeting comes ahead of the G7 leaders’ summit in June and COP26 hosted by the UK in November.
