Team Leader – South of England (Baker Consultants Ltd)

Who we are:

Baker Consultants Ltd are driven by a passion for our people and the quality of our work. We have a thirst for developing new techniques & technologies; an obsession with conservation law, policy & best practice and how all these things interact with the work we do.

We don’t just chase high volume night-time ecology survey work and if you were interested enough to read this advert, then hopefully you already know a bit about us and what we stand for. The majority of our team have been with us for around ten years, which is a testament to how much people value the training, culture & variety of work we do. We have an enviably low staff turnover rate, which shows how much value staff wellbeing and happiness at work.

Who we’re looking for:

Our current team are all within 1hr of our Derbyshire office, but due to our growing orderbook, we are looking for someone to be based in the South of England. They will have the ambition to help us grow, building a local team supporting projects across the south, south-east and south-west.

You will be given the support to help build your own team, with autonomy and the ability to manage your own time. Our staff manage their own workloads so they never become overwhelmed, including a short-term TOIL system to sensibly limit night-time surveys & your time away from home. This helps break the cycle of crazy summers and quieter winters, by spreading work more evenly over the year.

You may be working in another consultancy or a local authority and seeking to expand your horizons – or consolidate an area of interest which is currently untapped or unsupported. We are always open to new ideas, new technologies and new ways of working, welcoming input from all staff, so that we continue to be an exciting place to work.

You will ideally have at least 10 years experience, a confident approach to client management and developing new business, as well as the ability to manage your own projects. Attention to detail, experience of Line Management and commercial awareness are key for this role. You’ll have the skills to work with less experienced ecologists and leading by example.

You will have an area of technical expertise and the willingness to roll your sleeves up and get involved with both habitat and species surveys when necessary. Candidates with strong botany skills, are interested in developing their HRA expertise (incl. learning from a National expert) or with a Bat Mitigation Class Licence are encouraged to apply.

What we can offer you:

We are a small but highly effective team, who’ve always used remote working to give maximum flexibility so staff can find the best work/life balance. We are focused on recruiting the best people with the right attitude – so your current (or preferred) location in the South is not a deciding factor.

We offer a competitive salary of £40k – £55k (dependant on experience) plus a bonus scheme, alongside a range of other benefits, including 25 days of annual leave (plus an extra 3days for the Christmas closure) and a contributory pension scheme.

We’ve recently won two CIEEM awards, but don’t let that put you off! So whether you’re into research, passionate about a particular survey technique, interacting with clients or have a niche skill then get in touch.
