Senior Ecologist (Astell Associates)

The Role

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Ecologist to join our close-knit team of enthusiastic professionals. This is a key role offering the opportunity to lead projects, mentor junior staff and contribute to the future development of the company.

This is a full-time post, with flexibility to work additional/anti-social hours when required.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for leading and managing ecology projects, including:

  • Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
  • Ecological Impact Assessments
  • Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments
  • Protected Species Surveys, Licensing & Mitigation Strategies
  • Tree Surveys and Tree Management Recommendations

You will play an active role in:

  • Generating new business and the preparation of quotations and proposals for new projects
  • Consulting with sub-contractors, interdisciplinary teams, and conservation bodies
  • Ensuring the steady progression of projects by coordinating work in-house and with clients and contractors
  • Providing mentoring and support to junior team members, helping to develop company processes and efficient working practices
  • Operating at all times in accordance with the CIEEM Professional Code of Conduct

Qualifications

  • Relevant degree or master’s qualification in ecology or closely related subject
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, ideally within consultancy
  • Understanding of current UK/Scottish nature conservation legislation and planning policy
  • Full membership of CIEEM (or working toward)
  • Excellent survey skills, including UK Habitat Classification
  • Knowledge of and ability to produce BNG assessments
  • Holder of one or more protected species licences
  • Strong report writing, communication and project management skills
  • Working knowledge of QGIS, ArcGIS and AutoCAD
  • Fluent English speaker
  • Full UK driving licence
