Principal/Associate Ecological Consultant (Nicholsons)

Nicholsons, experts in delivering nature-led services, are seeking an experienced Principal/Associate Ecological Consultant to lead and support the ecology team and support the wider company through interdepartmental interaction, business development and knowledge sharing.

With a focus on quality and technical excellence, our ecology team has a varied and interesting client base. We are increasingly working with projects outside of the development sphere, for example, new environmental opportunities via a restorative approach to land management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical expertise and leadership of the ecology team across both offices including complex project management.
  • Project management and liaison.
  • Mentoring others within the ecology team.
  • Provide sound technical advice to clients.
  • Preparation of fee proposals and reports.
  • Business development and growth activities.
  • Preparing and delivering team training as well as CPD to industry professionals.

Role requirements:

  • Passion for the protection and enhancement of our planet.
  • Minimum 6 years of UK office-based ecology experience.
  • Relevant degree level qualification.
  • At least one protected species licence (bats or dormice preferred).
  • Full membership (or working towards) of CIEEM.
  • Sound understanding of current environmental legislation and the planning system.
  • Proven experience in
    • Managing survey teams and/or subcontractors and use of technical survey equipment.
    • Site appraisal, with demonstrable botanical ID skills (FISC Level 3 or above).
    • Project management, including larger and more complex sites.
    • Being a named ecologist, alternative contact or accredited agent within species mitigation licences (bats preferred).
    • Designing and implementing mitigation for development projects.
    • Working with DEFRA Biodiversity Metric.

Desirable Skills:

  • Advanced skills in at least one specialist area of ecology.
  • Registered under Natural England Bat Class Licence / Earned Recognition schemes.
  • Experience in leading more complex reporting work such as BREEAM, Habitat Regulations Assessments, or EIA chapters.
  • Chartered membership of CIEEM or demonstrably approaching this level.
  • Experience in driving technological improvements in ecology consultancy.

Role-specific Benefits:

  • £45,000 – £60,000 depending on experience.
