Nature Conservation Officer (Bristol City Council)

Regularly voted to be one of the best places to live in the UK, Bristol is celebrated as one of the most liveable Cities in the country with excellent green credentials, access to open spaces and within easy reach of the coast and countryside of the South West. With a population of nearly 500,000 people and growing, Bristol City Council is determined to make sure this prosperity and the opportunities that come with it benefit everyone, through the provision of new homes and business opportunities in sustainable, mixed-use, nature rich communities.

It’s an exciting time to work with us. We were the first UK City to declare an Ecological Emergency, and we have launched an Action Plan to embed nature conservation within programmes and projects across the organisation. This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Council’s City Design team; an innovative, multi-disciplinary service working cross-departmentally within the Council to enable sustainable, inclusive growth through integrated placemaking.

You will be providing expert ecology advice to planning officers and project managers on nature conservation issues in planning policy, planning applications, and corporate projects.

On a day-to-day basis you will be:

  • Providing specialist advice to planning case officers to ensure that nature conservation matters are taken fully into consideration in the planning process.
  • Inputting to the development of planning policy in respect of specific sites, and across the City.
  • Helping to establish our organisational approaches and working practices in response to the Environment Act and Biodiversity Net Gain.

If you have a passion for conserving nature and creating great places, and experience of working in a development management environment, we welcome an application from you.

We will need you to:

  • Demonstrate a high level of experience as an ecology specialist working within a planning environment and giving effective nature conservation advice.
  • Have a high degree of autonomy, independently managing your own workload. One day you might be looking at proposals relating to Bristol City Centre, the next Habs Regs Assessments for development near Ramsar sites on the Severn estuary.

Why Bristol City Council?

At Bristol City Council, we go that extra mile for our people; we offer a work environment which is fast moving and supportive, giving you the chance to use your skills and develop new ones within a high-profile organisation.
