Ecologist (Connect Plus Services)

Who we are

Connect Plus Services is responsible for operating and maintaining the M25 network which carries 15% of all UK motorway traffic with 73 million journeys a year. Despite being one of the busiest motorways in Europe, it comprises a huge, connected area of untouched verge habitat providing a valuable refuge for wildlife. Often these undisturbed habitats offer the only viable areas for some species, forming an ecological corridor through urban or intensive agricultural areas. At Connect Plus Services we strive not only to protect the wildlife and vital habitats within on the highway verge, but to enhance them to fulfil their potential.

This role sits within a multi-disciplinary Environment and Sustainability Team working with Designers and Project Managers and the Construction Team to ensure positive ecological outcomes for all works on the network.

Main Purpose of role:

  • To organise and carry out ecological surveys.
  • Experience of undertaking Phase 1 Habitat and UK HAB Surveys
  • Lead on identification and execution of Biodiversity Net Gain calculations
  • Working knowledge of the DEFRA Biodiversity Metric 2 calculation
  • To develop, implement and monitor ecological improvement schemes
  • Provide mentoring to Assistant Ecologist.
  • Provide ecological advice to designers and contractors on site.
  • Ability to write Precautionary Methods of Work, Ecological Reports and bid documents

Qualifications / Skills / Experience:

  • Relevant degree
  • Minimum of three years’ experience
  • Membership of CIEEM
  • Holder of one or more of any European Protected Species licence – preferably for great crested newts and hazel dormice
  • Experience using GIS applications


We have CPS offices at South Mimms, Leatherhead or Dartford. Your office will be the one closest to your home.

This role is available part time, job share or full time. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people are not available full time.
