Our Flood Risk Management Department constructs and maintains structures to reduce flooding from our rivers and the sea. We need to ensure our work is both compliant with ecological legislation and improves the environment.
To help us do this we are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced person to join our Flood Risk Management Department as a Biodiversity Technical Specialist. This role will mainly cover the Tees and Wear Rivers in the Northeast of England.
You will have a proven background in the ecology and legislative protection of protected / priority species and habitats, you will help us ensure our work is compliant with relevant environmental legislation.
You will strategically review our Flood Risk Management Revenue programme in the south of our area (Wear and Tees). Collaborating with our colleagues and contractors, you will advise on ecological assessment requirements and the environmental impacts or mitigation needed to deliver this programme. You will provide technical input where required. You will also identify opportunities to enhance the environment and mitigate the impact of our work.
You will advise our major capital schemes to ensure our environmental objectives are met, working closely with project teams, contractors and external ecologists.
You will identify and influence opportunities to deliver multiple benefits, Natural Flood Management and working with natural processes, through flood risk management planning/delivery, and ensure that all our work complies with our legal environmental requirements.
You will work need to work closely with our Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology Teams and our other Biodiversity Advisor.
You will mostly cover the Tees and Wear Rivers and you will be able to be based in either our Darlington or Newcastle Office. Whilst you will have an office base we do work flexibly with a mixture of home and office working. Part time hours will also be considered.
You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.
